An hourslong standoff in Long Beach came to a peaceful conclusion as police managed to safely rescue a hostage and take an armed suspect into custody. The ordeal began near Junipero Beach on Wednesday night and extended into the early hours of Thursday morning.
The sequence of events started just before 10 p.m. Wednesday when a man was reported firing shots into the air on the 2000 block of East Ocean Boulevard, KTLA reported. Responding officers arrived and pursued the suspect, who fled to a nearby home on Gaviota Avenue and 1st Street where he took a resident hostage. Despite the tense situation, at around 2 a.m., a video captured the hostage appearing at the doorway, indicating to officers that he was alive and unharmed before being guided back inside by the suspect.
SWAT teams and hostage negotiators from the Long Beach Police Department were dispatched to the scene, working tirelessly through the night to secure a resolution without harm to the hostage or the broader community. Their efforts culminated successfully when, according to a FOXLA report, the suspect surrendered and the hostage was released uninjured around 4 a.m Thursday morning.
During the incident, the police instructed residents to avoid the corner of Gaviota Avenue, and 1st Street to ensure public safety and to facilitate police operations. The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed, with law enforcement withholding details pending further investigation as reported by CBS News.
The neighborhood has since been cleared for residents to return, as police wrap up the scene which remained closed off well into the morning hours. Further updates are expected as the Long Beach Police Department continues its investigation into the events that led to the standoff.
