In the early hours of Thursday morning, a gruesome act of animal cruelty erupted in northeast Harris County, resulting in the death of a kitten and the rescue of nine other animals. Two juveniles are currently being sought by authorities after they allegedly set a 6-week-old kitten on fire in the 12600 block of Drifting Woods Drive. Surveillance cameras captured the harrowing incident, which saw the kitten running ablaze down the street, pursued by a dog said to belong to one of the suspects. Witnesses heard laughter, initially mistaking the commotion for a festive gathering. "I heard laughing. I thought they were having a party outside or something," Arleth Garcia, a local resident, told KTRK.
Upon realization of the tragic scene, witnesses attempted to extinguish the flames unsuccessfully with water and then resorted to using clumps of grass. The kitten was ultimately taken to a vet by deputies and the SPCA, where it had to be euthanize due to the extend of its injuries. "The video was terrible. I mean, that cat burned for a while and suffered greatly," Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen conveyed in a statement obtained by KTRK.
Further investigation led to a nearby residence where the suspects were seen entering. Acting on a tip, authorities obtained a search warrant which unveiled a distressing scene; two dogs, seven puppies, and one cat were discovered kept in deplorable conditions, without access to food, water, or shelter. "They were all in bad shape and were found locked up in cages without access to water or food," the precinct 3 constable's office shared in a statement on Houston Chronicles page.
As of this report, the Houston SPCA is providing care for the rescued animals, while the Constable's office continues the search for the two young suspects, whose ages are estimated to be between 10 and 15. The community has been urged to stay vigilant and report any signs of animal cruelty. A custody hearing for the seized animals is scheduled for next week, as documented by KTRK.
