Residents of Houston and the surrounding areas brace for a sunny, yet unsettled week ahead, with weather authorities predicting both high temperatures and a series of potential afternoon thunderstorms.
The National Weather Service's Houston/Galveston office sets today's high at a sizzling 93 degrees with light to moderate southeast winds. Evening plans should remain largely unaffected by weather, with mostly clear skies and a low around 77. "Sunday brings a high near 91 with heat index values as high as 101," according to NWS Houston/Galveston. These conditions continue into the new week, with a slight escalation in storm chances beginning Monday.
The weather outlook becomes notably more complex as the week progresses. Starting Monday, there's a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10 am, with precipitation probabilities hovering at 30 percent. This pattern is set to repeat itself through to Friday, bringing a mix of mostly sunny skies and intermittent thunderstorms.
Amplifying concerns, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has identified "a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms across parts of the Southern Plains," including Houston's vicinity. Areas just west of Houston should remain vigilant for isolated severe storms, capable of producing severe gusts and hail on Sunday. The SPC warns, "Moderate instability appears likely to develop in the vicinity of the front, from southwestern Oklahoma westward into west Texas and the southern Texas Panhandle."
While Houstonians are used to the capriciousness of Gulf Coast weather, the SPC advises precaution due to the potential severity of the upcoming weather, especially for those residing in or traveling to storm prediction zones. Residents are encouraged to stay informed on weather updates and plan accordingly for outdoor activities, with an eye toward the sky as those peak heating hours roll in.
