Amidst the stillness of classrooms and the silent corridors of schools during the summer break, Houston's children are not to be left without the sustenance of daily nutrition. Houston Independent School District (HISD) has announced the commencement of its Summer Feeding Program, an initiative ensuring that the youth of the community will continue to receive the essential meals they depend on throughout the academic year. According to Click2Houston, the program, which started on June 17, offers free breakfast and lunch to students and any child aged up to 18, and enrolled students with disabilities up to age 21.

The effort by HISD is designed to seamlessly bridge to provide a continuity of nutrition from the end of one academic chapter to the beginning of the next. Breakfast is available from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m., whereas lunch spans from 11 a.m. to noon across most HISD campuses, with some variations depending on the school. However, it's worth noting that meals will not be served on June 19, July 4, or July 5. Parents and students looking for the closest meal site have multiple resources at their disposal, including texting "food" or "comida" to 304-304, calling 211, or checking the HISHD website for details.

In alliance with the Texas Department of Agriculture and other agencies, this outreach by HISD is part of a larger concern to combat food insecurity, which can become particularly poignant during summer months when schools—often the hub of consistent daily meals—are not in session. As reported by KIAH, the initiative caters not only to the younger children but also extends its reach to HISD students with disabilities who are 21 years old and younger, ensuring an inclusive approach to the well-being of all students.
