A 21-year-old Houston man has been sentenced to a landmark 27 years in prison for his involvement in a significant drug trafficking operation. U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced that Dhevani Mitchell, after pleading guilty on December 4, 2023, faced the judicial reckoning for supplying a variety of drugs, including meth, cocaine, and fentanyl.
U.S. District Judge George C. Hanks Jr. did not mince words when sentencing Mitchell. Given multiple earlier opportunities to reform, the court found that he rather opted to further immerell in his illicit activities. "Mitchell’s conduct had destroyed lives and families and was a threat to the community. The court also found Mitchell continued to deal drugs and “do harm” after having multiple chances and would continue to do so if given the opportunity," the judge noted during the sentencing.
Back in the spring of 2021, law enforcement seized an arsenal from Mitchell's home: nearly 11 kilograms of meth, over a kilo of heroin, a stash of suspected fentanyl, a compound of pills, and five firearms. In a scene straight out of an action movie, authorities discovered Mitchell in a back bedroom, with a 9-millimeter handgun lurking under a pillow beside him. Also found were a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition, imparting a sense of the danger involved in Mitchell's trade.
Mitchell remains in custody while he awaits transfer to an as-yet undetermined federal prison. In the case prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Day and Christine Lu, the investigation was the cornerstone of collaborative efforts by the Drug Enforcement Administration with the Houston Police Department and Texas Department of Public Safety throwing their full weight behind it.
