Following the turmoil of a shooting incident last month, Houston police have successfully apprehended a suspect allegedly involved in the violence, with a statewide manhunt still active for the second suspect. The shooting, which took place in the pre-dawn light on Lyons Avenue, led to two men sustaining injuries that were fortunately deemed non-life-threatening, according to the Houston authorities.
The Houston Police Department, via an official news release, confirmed the arrest of Adolfo Aguirre-Mendiola, 27, on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon as recognized by the 179th State District Court, and added a violation of a protective order in Harris County Criminal Court #7, to his list of charges. An image of Aguirre-Mendiola was made available with the release. His counterpart, David Rojas, 44, remains at large with a misdemeanor theft charge looming in Harris County Criminal Court #2; as of now, no photo of Rojas has been circulated by the police.
The Houston Police Department's Major Assaults & Family Violence Division Detectives M. George and J. Windham recounted the series of events leading to the altercation. It began when Rojas allegedly took some property from a 28-year-old female. When Aguirre-Mendiola intervened to retrieve the belongings, a confrontation broke out, escalating to the point where Aguirre-Mendiola fired a gun. Both Rojas and an unrelated 45-year-old male bystander were hit by the gunfire. Despite the chaotic scene, both injured men were quickly transported to a nearby hospital where their injuries were treated.
Further investigative efforts by authorities pinned Aguirre-Mendiola as the triggerman, with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office affirming the charges against him. Aguirre-Mendiola's subsequent arrest took place on Thursday, June 6th, culminating in his booking into the Harris County Jail. As the search for Rojas continues, the police urge the public to offer any knowledge regarding his whereabouts. The Houston Police Department has requested anyone with information to contact the HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division at 713-308-8800.
