A string of unprovoked attacks in Houston has left residents on edge as authorities seek public assistance to capture the assailant. According to Fox26 Houston, the first known incident occurred on April 6, when Greg Audel, 57, was beaten while walking his dog in Montrose. "He said you want to get beat up today?" Audel recounted to Fox26 Houston just before the violent encounter that led to his assault and the ensuing intervention of passersby, whom Audel hailed as heroes for potentially saving his life.
The suspect remains at large, leaving the community to grapple with the menace of a perpetrator whose motivations appear rooted in violence alone. Houston police have connected this assault to a subsequent attack one week later. On April 13, a 77-year-old man and his wife were brutally assaulted outside Café Ginger in a similar fashion. In a disturbing revelation, Audel told KHOU 11 that, upon seeing photographs of the second attack, he was certain it was the same man who had attacked him.
These violent occurrences have awakened a tenacious spirit among the Houston community, with Audel representing the resilience of a neighborhood shaken but not bowed. As for the suspect, Houston police have released a sketched likeness in the hopes that public tips can lead to an arrest. Audel expressed his determination to see the assailant apprehended, stating to Fox26 Houston, "I want to get this guy arrested, I want him off the street. I don’t want him to hurt anyone else."
Police believe the two attacks are related, and with marked urgency, they continue their investigation, bolstered by reports from security guards who sighted the suspect in the area recently. As the manhunt intensifies, Houston's Major Assaults department and Crime Stoppers are calling for information from anyone who can identify the suspect. If you have any knowledge about these incidents, please contact HPD's Major Assaults at (713) 308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS.
