In a bid to combat the ongoing blood shortage crisis in Orange County, the UCI Medical Center is calling upon the community to roll up their sleeves. According to a press release from the City of Irvine, a blood drive will be held on Thursday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Irvine Civic Center. The event marks a collaboration between the City and UCI Health, aiming to secure the essential blood donations needed for patient care at the area's primary trauma center.
Those inclined to donate can look forward to a small token of appreciation – a choice between a $10 gift card to Target, In-N-Out Burger, or Starbucks, or a specially designed tote bag. Additionally, donors will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win four passes to the Great Park Ice & FivePoint Arena. "Appointments are suggested but not required and can be made in advance online," the city's statement noted, though walk-ins will also be welcomed on the day of the blood drive.
As the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the region, UCI Medical Center faces a constant demand for blood, using upwards of 1,000 units each month. The recipients are often cancer patients, victims of severe accidents, or newborns in the NICU – a stark reminder of the diverse and urgent need for blood donation.
For those considering donation, more information on eligibility and safety is available on the City of Irvine's website. The Irvine Civic Center is conveniently located at 1 Civic Center in Irvine, offering easy access for residents who wish to contribute to this crucial cause.
