On Monday afternoon, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) sprang into action when an alarming orange vapor cloud was sighted emanating from a Chatsworth business. The hazardous materials incident occurred on the 20700 block of West Marilla Street, with first responders arriving at about 1:03 PM. Upon arrival, firefighters were met by the sight of orange smoke billowing from the storage area of a 20,000-square-foot building, according to the LAFD.
The swift response by the LAFD included evacuating approximately 70 individuals from the vicinity, a figure that underscores the scale of the potential danger, despite there being no immediate threats reported. "There is no known offsite hazard," the LAFD announced, suggesting the risk was limited to the nearby area, Hoodline reported. Officials cordoned off the area, keeping the public at a safe distance while the hazmat specialists conducted their investigation into the nature of the chemicals involved.
LAFD's Hazardous Materials specialists worked diligently to identify the unknown substance, which was later clarified as "unknown acids." A clean-up crew, working in conjunction with LA County Health Hazmat, was quickly mobilized to decontaminate the area, ensuring that the site was safe for employees to return to work by the next morning. During the incident, paramedics were on hand to evaluate affected individuals, with eight people being assessed, and one person transported for minor skin irritation, as per LAFD's statement.
