LAFD Swiftly Contains Brush Fire in Sepulveda Basin, Prevents Damage to StructuresSource: Google Street View

Los Angeles firefighters quickly contained a brush fire that erupted in the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area on Thursday afternoon. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reported deploying both ground and air resources to tackle the fire, which was initially estimated to be less than one acre in size. According to the LAFD alert, the fire presented a moderate rate of spread due to light winds out of the southwest and posed no threat to nearby structures or necessitated evacuations. Burbank Boulevard between Woodley Avenue and the 405 Freeway was closed to traffic as operations were underway.

Despite the potential to cause significant disruption, the LAFD was able to quickly get the fire under control, containing it within approximately 90 minutes of their initial response. Eventually, the fire was established to have covered a total of 2.25 acres. "A series of precise LAFD helicopter water drops have contained the perimeter of the blaze in thick underbrush," the department stated in their update. Firefighters were then set to remain on the scene through the night to fully extinguish all flames within the contained area, as per the report released at 7:20 PM.

No injuries nor infrastructural damage was reported as a result of the fire, which has been dubbed the Burbank Fire. The LAFD's efforts were lauded, especially considering the dry conditions that can so often lead brush fires to quickly become out of hand. By 7:45 PM, all LAFD helicopters were released, and ground operations were solely focused on monitoring and extinguishing any lingering flames. Travelers were advised to continue to avoid the area, as the road closures were to remain in place while operations concluded. "Closure of all traffic lanes... will continue tonight until LAFD operations are complete," confirmed the LAFD in their final update of the evening.

Investigations into the specific cause of the Burbank Fire were set to commence following the full extinguishment of the fire.
