On the afternoon of July 4, a pursuit of a stolen Kia in South Los Angeles led to a dramatic conclusion in a Hawthorne neighborhood. According to KTLA, the chase involved a vehicle suspected to be a gray Kia Soul and reached speeds up to 100 mph on the 110 and 405 freeways before exiting into a residential area.
It was just before 1 p.m. when the vehicle pulled off the freeway, leading five individuals to quickly hop out and scatter into the neighborhood. The reduction in traffic due to the holiday arguably made it possible to drive at such dangerous speeds. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Hawthorne police began a search operation, with the suspects believed to have entered residences at around 1:10 p.m., as reported by KTLA.
Interestingly, the pursuit started on the southbound 110 Freeway and deputies picked it up near Wilmington, as per CBS Los Angeles. The driver navigated from surface streets back onto the Northbound 110, exhibiting reckless behavior including speeding and weaving through traffic. Eventually, all five suspects exited the Kia on W. 129th Street and Jefferson Avenue and fled on foot.
