Those in Lewisville with a penchant for history and tune will soon have their interests met in a unique convergence. "The Quilt: A Living History of African American Music" is the next featured installment in the Lewisville Talks – City Speaker Series, set to be held at Huffines Performance Hall of the Lewisville Grand Theater. Slated for Thursday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m., the documentary presents a journey through the rich tapestry of African American music history.
The heart of this story follows Aunt Cynthia, a dedicated music historian, as she guides her niece, Lauren, through various epochs of aural expression shaped by African American experiences. From the depths of slavery to the defiance of the Civil Rights movement, the genres explored include Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Soul, R&B, and Hip Hop. Amid this voyage, the film utilizes the metaphor of a quilt, illustrating how melodies from bygone eras continue to resonate in the music that defines current culture. Lauren finds a newfound appreciation for the generational threads that connect her to this legacy.
Following the movie, there will be a platform for further discussion. Cynthia Freeman Gibbs, the filmmaker, will attend alongside cast member Lauren Anya Jwahir Hunter and local artist Kwinton Gray. The Denton Black Film Festival will take the helm, moderating the conversation and likely delving deeper into the crossroads between cinematic storytelling and the evolution of African American music.
The event emerged from the proactive measures recommended by the Mayor’s Commission – Listen Learn Lead.
