This summer, residents of Long Beach are invited to participate in a series of neighborhood leadership workshops, designed to empower and educate the community on various fundamental skills. The initiative, run by the city's Community Development Department, is kicking off on Saturday, June 8, with a workshop focused on digital inclusion—aiming to bridge the digital divide in the Long Beach area. The event will be held at Admiral Kidd Park from 10 to 11:30 a.m., as reported by the City of Long Beach’s official website.
The upcoming digital workshop will feature a range of resources, including training on digital skills by Library Services and access to low-cost computing devices such as desktops, laptops, and mobile hotspots, as part of the City's Digital Inclusion Initiative. According to the City of Long Beach, the city is also collaborating with community-based organizations and the Technology and Innovation Department to provide these services. To accommodate Long Beach's diverse population, interpretation services will be provided in multiple languages: including Khmer, Spanish, and Tagalog.
The initiative is deeply committed to ensuring digital equity, with the intention that "every individual in Long Beach, regardless of background, neighborhood or identity, has high quality, accessible, technology resources and services to be civically engaged and socially and economically empowered," as highlighted by the city's press release. Attendees can also expect to receive information on low-cost internet services and details on where to find free public wi-fi locations.
Looking beyond June, the Community Development Department also has additional workshops planned for the summer. Each session is tailored to cover a different topic necessary for community leadership and empowerment. As per the City of Long Beach, detailed information for these workshops will be rendered closer to the respective dates, yet, the schedule for the following workshops is set: Financial Skills Training on July 13, Understanding the City's Planning Process on August 17, and Working with Nonprofits and Fiscal Agents on September 14. Light refreshments will be available, assuring a welcoming atmosphere for all community members who wish to learn. Further details can be found on the Long Beach community website.
