A fire erupted in a converted garage in Sylmar, prompting a swift Los Angeles Fire Department response on Sunday night. According to LAFD's initial alert, the blaze began at approximately 10:52 PM at 15460 W Roxford Street. Firefighters encountered a detached two-car garage converted into a living space that was fully engulfed in flames.
The Los Angeles Fire Department has reported that the structure was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Within just 17 minutes, 42 firefighters managed to quell the fire, "confining flames within the unoccupied one-story detached 2-car garage at the rear of the residential property, that had been converted to living quarters" as noted in a follow-up LAFD report. The quick action prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and no injuries were reported.
While the firefighters' effort was successful, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The detached garage is situated at the back of a property in a dense residential area of Sylmar, a neighborhood that is not unfamiliar with emergency situations requiring LAFD intervention.
The successful containment is credited to the coordination within multiple LAFD units including Engines 91, 75, 287, and 298, along with Truck companies T75, T87, and T98, amongst others. Firefighters remained on site after the knockdown to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and to conduct a thorough investigation, the outcome, or details of which have yet to be disclosed.
