A brush fire that ignited in Sunland on June 21st was successfully contained by firefighters later the same day. The Los Angeles Fire Department, together with Los Angeles County and Angeles National Forest firefighters, responded to the incident near 11360 N Alethea Dr, which was initially reported to be less than one acre in size. According to the LAFD alert, the fire, referred to as the #NationalFire, was burning light-to-medium brush in a Mutual Threat Zone near the borders of the responding agencies' jurisdictions.
Despite the potential risks, no structures were threatened by the blaze, and no evacuations were deemed necessary. In a move to ensure the safety of the area and to allow emergency operations to proceed smoothly, law enforcement temporarily closed Big Tujunga Canyon Road in both directions between Mt. Gleason Avenue and Big Canyon Drive. However, within a short timeframe, crews were able to efficiently to contain the fire to an eighth of an acre. The quick action by first responders prevented any structure damage and further spread, as noted in an LAFD update on the containment.
As reported by the LAFD, the exact cause of the fire is under investigation. Following containment, law enforcement has reopened Big Tujunga Canyon Road to traffic.
