In an attempt to bolster the ongoing struggle against homelessness, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass revealed a new Inside Safe operation focused around the vicinity of South Union Avenue and West 3rd Street, in collaboration with Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez and the LA County Homeless Initiative, as reported by the Office of the Mayor. The operation aimed to transition more of LA's unhoused population to stable living situations.
"We continue taking steps to save lives and provide supportive services to those Angelenos in need, across the city," Mayor Bass stated, expressing her commitment to addressing the pervasive issue of homelessness. Councilmember Hernandez echoed this sentiment, highlighting the positive outcomes of the operation, "Many of the people who came inside during yesterday's operation have been waiting, for housing placements to open up for months," as per the Office of the Mayor. Hernandez conveyed the operation’s immediate relief for those languishing in uncertainty and their first step towards a stable life.
Records suggest a significant decline in tent encampments within every council district in 2023, and the number of unhoused residents receiving shelter has surpassed the previous year's totals—a testament to the collaborative efforts across city and county agencies. These measures are part of a larger, concerted action plan involving the City Council, County, and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA).
