Los Angeles investigators are urging the community to assist in the hunt for an unknown driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run accident that cost a pedestrian their life. The incident occurred on the evening of April 16, around 8:00 p.m., when an individual crossing Mission Road near 1st Street was struck by a vehicle, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The suspect, driving what has been described as a black Toyota Camry or Nissan Altima with black rims, failed to stop and fled the scene proceeding southbound on Mission Road then making a turn westbound onto 1st Street and eventually a turn northbound onto Vignes Street and the vehicle last seen making a westbound turn onto Commercial Street from Vignes Street, leaving the victim without the immediate care required in those critical moments, as per the LAPD. The Los Angeles Fire Department later arrived to find the pedestrian beyond the reach of aid, confirming their death at the scene.
A video capturing the collision has been made available and can be viewed by the public, as a posted reminder of the dire consequences such a hit-and-run can impose, no description of the driver is currently made available but the authorities are hopeful that with community assistance, they can bring the driver to justice. The LAPD emphasizes the legal obligations of motorists to remain at the scene in the aftermath of any collision, which includes the duty to identify oneself and to render aid.
In line with the city's determined efforts to address such offenses, the City Council had previously amended the Los Angeles Administrative Code in 2015 to establish a Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund, which offers up to $50,000 as a reward for information leading to the driver's identification, their apprehension, conviction, or a resolution through a civil compromise, as reported by the LAPD.
