In a tragic incident early yesterday morning, the Long Beach Police Department reported that a male adult bicyclist was killed in a traffic collision. According to a news release, the accident occurred at the intersection of 7th Street and Bellflower Boulevard, near Margo Avenue.
Officers were called to the scene at around 5:05 a.m. after reports of an injury traffic collision, upon their arrival, they discovered the victim, an unconscious male bicyclist lying on the south sidewalk of 7th Street. Despite the swift response from Long Beach Fire Department personnel, the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver involved in the collision did not flee but stayed and cooperated with authorities.
The official statement provided by LBPD's Communications Division indicates that the bicyclist was struck from behind while traveling in the eastbound number three lane by a vehicle moving in the same direction; currently, speed, distracted driving, and impaired driving are not considered factors in the crash.
While the identity of the deceased remains withheld pending notification of kin the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner has been involved in the case, as investigators continue to piece together what led to this fatal encounter.
