Los Angeles County has been shaken by a double murder that claimed the lives of two brothers, Sergio and Ricardo Rios, in the Exposition Park area earlier this month. The Los Angeles Police Department was called to a scene of violence at around 2 p.m. on the first of June, where they found the brothers with gunshot wounds in a car on the 1100 block of Browning Boulevard, as reported by LAPD's newsroom. Sergio, 33, was pronounced dead at the location, while his younger brother Ricardo, 19, later died in a hospital.
In rapid response, a suspect was identified and apprehended by Los Angeles authorities. According to KTLA, Marcos Navarro, 33, was arrested the following day and is now facing two counts of murder. The detectives believe there may have been an argument between the victims and the suspect prior to the shooting. Caught fleeing in a light-colored Toyota sedan, Navarro's alleged actions have prompted discussions on gun control and the processes by which firearms are kept from the wrong hands.
The charges against Navarro were confirmed during a press conference by District Attorney George Gascón. "We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the brothers' loved ones who lost two members of their family to senseless gun violence," Gascón stated, emphasizing the importance of diligent actions to prevent further tragedies. This sentiment was echoed by Ivan Robles, the cousin of the slain men, who asked the pressing and haunting question during the press conference cited by CBS Los Angeles, "How many innocent men and women need to die before change happens in our gun laws?"
