A Michigan-based food distributor has issued a voluntary national recall of its ground black pepper due to possible salmonella contamination. The recall was announced by UBC Food Distributors, located in Dearborn, MI, targeting its Baraka brand ground black pepper. The product in question is packaged in 7-ounce plastic containers with an expiration date of January 2026.
According to CBS News Detroit, the contamination was discovered after routine testing by the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets, prompting notification from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to the FDA. UBC Food Distributors has stopped production as the FDA and the company investigate the cause of the problem. No reported illnesses have emerged yet in connection with the recalled product.
Consumers are urged by UBC to return the 7-ounce pepper containers to their place of purchase for a full refund. Further inquiries can be directed to the company's contact number, provided for assistance regarding the recall. Food Safety News reports that consumers may call 313-846-8117 with any questions they may have, Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Salmonella, a bacteria, can cause serious and potentially lethal infections, particularly in those with weakened immune systems, such as young children and the elderly. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) outlined that symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, generally surfacing within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. While most healthy adults recover without treatment, severe cases may require hospitalization. As detailed in TCPalm, salmonella infections prompt an estimated 1.35 million illnesses and 420 deaths in the U.S. each year.
This recall is a serious matter, as the health and safety of consumers are at risk. The collaborative efforts between state agriculture departments and the FDA underscore the importance of surveillance and swift action in the food distribution chain to prevent illness. Anyone in possession of the product should heed the warnings and return the pepper to ensure their well-being.
