Get ready to bait your hooks and rev up your off-road vehicles, because Michigan is throwing open the gates to its state parks and trails for the weekend. In what's being touted as the 'Three Free' Weekend, June 8-9 marks a rare opportunity for both Michiganders and visitors to engage in fishing, off-roading, and park exploration without spending a dime on fees, WZZM13 reports.
According to a statement obtained by WZZM13, DNR Director Scott Bowen expressed his anticipation for the weekend, saying, "We’re excited to celebrate ‘Three Free’ Weekend, a time when everyone gets to enjoy and take part in some of Michigan’s best outdoor recreation opportunities: fishing, off-roading and exploring Michigan’s award-winning state parks." The event aims to provide easy access to a new park or outdoor activity for those who may not typically get the chance—or for seasoned nature enthusiasts looking to share their love of the outdoors with friends and family.
Activities include fishing in both inland and Great Lakes waters, riding on 4,000 miles of state-trail routes, and access to the six scramble areas that are usually off-limits without proper permits. While the event is free, the DNR maintains that all fishing regulations still apply, so anglers should remain cognizant of the rules, as noted by the Department of Natural Resources.
Furthermore, the Weekend promotes awareness and responsibility in outdoor activities. The DNR urges everyone to review safety tips available on their site, especially regarding fire safety and trails usage. Invasive species prevention is also a key focus of the initiative—trail-goers are encouraged to clean equipment and vehicles to prevent the spread of non-native plants and animals. And yes, boaters must remember to inspect and clean their vessels to help keep Michigan's waterways pristine, the DNR announcement mentions.
