A New Jersey woman succumbed to her injuries a week after a brutal machete assault, allegedly by her boyfriend, officials said Sunday. The attack, which took place in front of the victim's child, has led to first-degree murder charges. Alex J. Williams, 24, is the accused assailant now facing these upgraded charges following the death of his girlfriend on May 30, as reported by NJ.com.

The incident occurred on May 23 in a parking lot at the Glen Oaks Apartment Complex in Wall, where the woman was found with "multiple, significant injuries." Alex Williams, who was initially charged with attempted murder was slapped with additional charges including endangering the welfare of a child, given that the assault happened close to the child, as per police officials. His detention hearing is tentatively scheduled for June 7, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office stated.

Williams, who is from Wall, was arrested without incident and is currently held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, authorities said. The prosecutor's office, not divulging the name of the victim, made it clear that the charges were upgraded in light of her passing.

In a tragic turn, the woman battled her injuries for a full week before dying, according to a statement made by Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago, obtained by the Daily Voice. Additional details provided by the authorities indicate that the child was in the "general proximity" at the time of the grisly attack, leading to Williams' charge of endangering the welfare of a child, apart from the more severe accusation of murder.

NBC Philadelphia reports that Williams is awaiting a judge's ruling in the upcoming detention hearing. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Cummings of the MCPO Major Crimes Bureau, and Williams’ defense is being handled by Anthony C. Aldorasi, Esq.
