In an effort to curb the spiraling crime and provide support in Kensington, Philadelphia's newest police academy recruits are set to patrol the neighborhood following their graduation. According to 6ABC, these officers will focus on the East Division, which includes Kensington, an area significantly impacted by violent crime and substance use disorder.

The Philadelphia Police Department's move immediately aims to strategically strengthen law enforcement in this challenging area. They will officially be out of the academy in just ten days, ready to directly address the neighborhood's needs. Mayor Cherelle Parker's administration has recently unfolded a five-step plan to ambitiously start to address the persistent problems of Kensington, as detailed in a report by CBS News Philadelphia. Kensington Avenue, in particular, has been a notorious hotspot for the city's open-air drug market.

Deep within this multi-phase initiative, touted by the city's administration, is a prioritization of law enforcement to carry out warrant sweeps and clamp down on drug sales and other quality-of-life crimes. Meanwhile, local harm reduction specialists like Roz Pichardo, who was mentioned by 6ABC, underscore the necessity for healing spaces like the Sunshine House – a place she founded to serve individuals suffering from substance use disorder.

"We're not trying to institutionalize people already suffering. We need to provide a place of healing, a place of recovery," Pichardo told 6ABC. The increased police presence is an aspect of the city's broader plan, which ultimately seeks to involve the community deeply in Kensington's transition and sustainability. The Kensington Caucus, composed of council members Quetcy Lozada, Mike Driscoll, Jim Harrity, and Mark Squilla, has released a joint statement highlighting the community's need for increased services to ensure public safety.

"Residents in the Kensington area have been expressing a strong need for increased services to address the various public safety concerns in their community. The high levels of violent crime, retail theft, open-air drug sales and gun-related incidents in Kensington make it clear that there is a need for improved safety measures," said the Kensington Caucus in a statement as they discuss the plan for the burgeoning police presence. The statement further reads, "The community deserves to feel that their family and loved ones are protected and that their government is making their safety a priority. Increasing the presence of officers to address public safety as a whole is a much-needed first step in restoring stability to this community, and an opportunity to rebuild the trust with residents that have lost faith in our system." In the coming weeks, as the new officers begin their patrol, it is expected that Philadelphia police will provide more clarity on their strategies moving forward, according to CBS News Philadelphia.
