Chaos erupted on the 210 Freeway near Pasadena last night when a white sedan, driven by an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, was struck by gunfire, leading to the arrest of Jaime Aguilar, a 28-year-old semi-truck driver. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. The motorist managed to drive 25 miles to meet with California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers in Sylmar after reporting the shooting, according to KTLA.
The unharmed driver discovered a bullet hole in the trunk of their sedan. Aguilar was detained by officers after the victim called 911 to report the damage. As of now, the CHP has not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting. A Sigalert was issued for a temporary lane closure while the authorities searched for casings and evidence to determine if more than one shot was fired, a spokesperson for the CHP told KTLA.
For further details, CBS Los Angeles reports that the deputy noticed a Freightliner following him as he was driving near the Allen Avenue exit. After attempting to exit at Lake Avenue—a mile further—he heard the shot. Upon stopping at a North Lake Avenue gas station, he found the damage on his car.
CHP has also extended a request for assistance from the public, asking anyone with information to reach out to CHP Officer Silver at 626-296-8100 as the investigation presses forward.
