On Tuesday, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced the sentencing of Jacob Anthony Caliboso, a 25-year-old man from Oxnard, to 30 years to life in state prison. The sentence comes after Caliboso was convicted of causing a DUI crash on June 22, 2020, that resulted in the deaths of a grandmother and her granddaughter. According to KTLA, the victims, Elva Andrade and her 7-year-old granddaughter Nevaeh Gomez, encountered a devastating end when Caliboso, under the influence of Xanax and marijuana, crashed into their motorcycle.
The crash, which took place on Pleasant Valley Road near Oxnard, showed evidence that Caliboso did not attempt to even activate his brakes before impacting the victims' vehicle. Investigators found over a thousand Snapchat videos and photos documenting Caliboso's repeated drug use and reckless driving in the period leading up to the fatal accident. In a statement made by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, it was revealed that Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Leija, who prosecuted the case, expressed that "The defendant’s callous conduct took the lives of two innocent people, and he deserved the maximum sentence."
The Ventura County District Attorney's office further confirmed that the victims’ families were present during the sentencing, with seven family members delivering poignant impact statements to the court. The prosecutor hoped that the outcome of the case would bring a "sense of justice and closure" to the bereaved family. The gravity of Caliboso's sentence reflects the jury's verdict, which was handed down on April 30, as reported in the District Attorney's official press release.
As part of the legal proceedings, a restitution hearing has been scheduled to further address the financial compensation for the victims' families. Judge Paul Feldman, who sentenced Caliboso to the maximum possible term, set this hearing for July 9, as per the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.
