Oxnard, CA is gearing up for another year of strict fireworks enforcement, as Independence Day approaches. In a press release issued by the Oxnard Police Department, the city has outlined plans to crack down on the use of illegal fireworks. Despite the dangers, last year the city fielded 631 calls to the police dispatch center related to fireworks in the month leading up to the holiday, and 393 disturbance calls were received during the eight-hour period on July 4th itself.
To tackle this issue, the Oxnard Police Department has adopted a "zero tolerance" policy toward fireworks violations, which often results in structure fires and emotional distress to residents and pets alike, some needing prescription sedatives to cope. According to the press release, in 2023, the department issued numerous citations for fireworks violations and informed the public of fines ranging from $250 to $1000, depending on the category of fireworks. Their efforts are not only limited to response but also involve proactive measures, including message trailers strategically placed around the city, mailing warning letters to addresses from where fireworks activity was previously reported, and using the crime analysis unit to target hotspots for patrols and enforcement.
The police department plans to deploy a variety of resources this year, from uniformed patrol to covert operations including drones, for fireworks suppression. Brian Woolley, Sergeant of the Oxnard Police Department, stated, "We are planning another comprehensive fireworks enforcement effort on July 4th utilizing all available resources," as stated in the Oxnard Police press release. On top of regular patrols, the department will be deploying officers in specialized units, and many officers who would normally have the day off will be assigned to work.
The Oxnard Police Department urges residents to celebrate safely and be considerate of their neighbors and pets by abstaining from using fireworks. To report fireworks activity, the community has multiple resources provided by the police department, including a dedicated fireworks cellphone line, an email tip line for fireworks, and a fireworks hotline for anonymous reporting. Residents can also call the non-emergency police number to report fireworks activity in progress. With these measures in place, the city hopes to reduce the negative impact of illegal fireworks and ensure a safer holiday for all.
