The City of Brotherly Love has kicked off another year of celebrating its diverse immigrant communities with the start of Immigrant Heritage Month. For the eighth consecutive year, Philadelphia is spotlighting the undeniable impact that immigrants have on the city's social, economic, and cultural fabric. According to a recent report by the Pew Charitable Trusts, a significant 15.7% of Philly’s population hails from outside of the U.S., higher than the national average. This month-long celebration is packed with a range of events aimed at amplifying immigrant voices and stories, in alignment with this year's theme "Stories Untold: Amplifying Immigrant Voices".
"This Immigrant Heritage Month, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of immigrants to the vibrant culture of the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection," Mayor Cherelle L. Parker said in a statement obtained by the City of Philadelphia's newsroom, promising to sustain Philadelphia's reputation as a Certified Welcoming City. Immigrant Business Week, one facet of the month, introduces immigrant business owners to resources that will spur their success from June 17 to June 23.
Amy Eusebio, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Office of Immigrant Affairs, hailed Mayor Parker's support for the immigrant community, saying, "This demonstrates her recognition of the many contributions immigrants have and continue to make to our wonderful city and that we have a responsibility to ensure that our policies and programs facilitate their successful inclusion and integration into the civic, economic and cultural fabric of Philadelphia." A wide array of programs including film screenings, panel discussions, and festivals will fill the city's calendar throughout the month. A highlight event is the Philadelphia Latino Film Festival, showcasing the best of Latino and Latinx filmmakers from May 26 to July 7, with both in-person and virtual screenings available to the public.
Another noteworthy event is World Refugee Day on June 20th, where a documentary titled "The Elephants and the Grass" will delve into the experience of a mother and daughter escaping Sudan's civil war. Moreover, Philadelphia African Restaurant Week from June 20 to June 30 will bring the flavors of African and diaspora cuisines to the forefront, with a family festival set for June 22 and 23 at LOVE Park. The Office of Immigrant Affairs, in commemoration of these occasions, is equally pleased to present fresh research findings about Philadelphia's changing immigrant demographics on June 26 at Esperanza. The data presentation by The Pew Charitable Trust’s Philadelphia research and policy initiative will be complemented by a discussion that delves into the personal tales behind the numbers.
All these events aim to bring into the light, the stories of different communities that too often go unheard, strengthening the city’s cultural tapestry.
