For two decades, Philadelphia's Center City SIPS has cemented its role as a midweek staple for locals and a draw for visitors seeking a lively happy hour scene. Celebrating its 20th season, this summer event is poised to infuse energy into the city's bars and restaurants each Wednesday evening from June 5 through August 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. 6abc reports that the Center City District (CCD) has once again orchestrated a series of partnerships to offer discounted food and drink specials across dozens of establishments, ensuring attendees have access to a variety of options at a lower cost.
Breaking from tradition, this year's Center City SIPS will to feature a specially crafted beer, "SIPS Summer Splash," - a new addition intended to commemorate the event's 20th iteration. Brewed in collaboration with Broad Street Brewing, this Mexican-style lager with lime will be sold exclusively at the Dilworth Park's Air Grille Garden, as noted by 6abc. The CCD and local businesses have collectively embraced the opportunity to elevate the happy hour experience while potentially attracting a diverse crowd.
Giavana Suraci, the senior manager of retail and marketing events with the Center City District, highlighted the initiative's enduring appeal and its role in supporting the hospitality industry, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic. "It started back in summer of 2004 really as a way to bring some business to our bars and restaurants during a traditionally slower period," Suraci elucidated in a statement obtained by CBS News Philadelphia. She added, "It's really the best happy hour you can think of, plus, anywhere you go in Center City, you know you're paying those prices."
With its $5 beers, $6 wines, and $7 cocktails, Center City SIPS has not only created a pricing benchmark that patrons have come to expect, but also an atmosphere that fosters social connections. Tamayra Saunders, an employee at City Hall, emphasized the social aspect of the event in an interview with CBS News Philadelphia, saying, "My favorite thing about SIPS is meeting new people from different offices, and the fries are delicious, and drinks are too." This sentiment was echoed by numerous attendees who view SIPS as a platform for inclusivity and community engagement.
As Philadelphia gears up to once again embrace its weekly happy hour tradition, both locals and tourists are invited to take part in the conviviality that SIPS promises. "No matter where you come from if you're local and you go to SIPS every week, or you're just visiting town and SIPS is happening on a Wednesday in the summer, you really feel at home here," an individual by the last name of Kurtzman told CBS News Philadelphia. The event's return not only marks a season of good deals and good company but also serves as a testament to the enduring allure of Philadelphia's urban social scene.
