Hey Philly parents, the city's dishing out a fresh opportunity for your kiddos this summer with the launch of the Summer Achievers program, aiming to keep your tykes engaged, educated, and entertained. This new initiative is a collaborative effort between the School District of Philadelphia and the Office of Children and Families, designed to prevent the summer slide and reinforce the confidence of students from 1st to 8th grade.
With the program set to run from June 25 through August 2—yes, every Monday to Friday from the ungodly hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.—these sessions won't cost you a dime, proving once again that the best things in life, or at least in education, are indeed free. The City of Philadelphia announced the curriculum includes hands-on activities facilitated by professionals who probably know their way around a classroom during the out-of-school-time, reading, and math support delivered by educators from Philly's school district frenzy.
With an educational program that also packs a punch of fun, the Summer Achievers ain't all textbooks and brain exercises. The weekly roster features field trips that promise to be both engaging and enlightening, and they didn't forget the need for kids to just be kids—with a healthy serving of games, sports, and the kind of outdoor play that doesn't involve a screen. Oh, and they're throwing in nutritious meals because running around and learning on an empty stomach is not good for anyone.
With astroturf in tow, running drills, and playing games to engage in sports, it's a wonder parents aren't already breaking the internet to secure a spot for their progeny in this educational summer oasis. But in case your fingers aren't flying across your keyboard already, here's a nudge: Registration is open, and you might want to act quickly as the spots are as coveted as a sunny day in the city of Brotherly Love—and we all know how quickly those can disappear.
