Riot Fest Bids Farewell to Douglass Park, Announces New Venue at SeatGeek Stadium in BridgeviewSource: Google Street View

The storied Riot Fest, a staple of Chicago's music scene since 2005, is relocating from its recent venue in Douglass Park to the more spacious SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, the organizers announced on Wednesday. The move marks the end of an eight-year stint at Douglass Park and curtails the yearly back-and-forth with the Chicago Park District that ultimately spurred the festival's exodus. According to a statement by festival co-founder Mike Petryshyn, obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times, the shift to Bridgeview is "solely because of the Chicago Park District."

The new festival grounds, referred to as "RiotLand," boast of easy accessibility — a point of significant consideration for attendees, touting connection via the 'L' train, on-site parking, and a dedicated rideshare zone. Shared via Riot Fest's website, the venue's facilities are expected to enhance the festival experience, with "padded turf fields" ensuring the end of the traditional muddy festival terrain. This year's lineup and tickets for the two- and three-day passes of the event, running from September 20-22, went live at 11 a.m. on the same day as the announcement.

In an interview, 24th Ward Alderwoman Monique Scott communicated her staunch support for Riot Fest, expressing disappointment with the Park District’s handling of the event's permits. Scott highlighted that the festival's departure resulted from "the challenges they have faced with the Chicago Park District process," as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. The Park District, as said by spokeswoman Irene Tostado, stands firm on the necessity of a community engagement process, mentioning that they were made aware "indirectly" of Riot Fest's decision to move. Tostado reaffirmed the balanced approach they strive for between community interests and event organizers.

Moving the festival has proven to be a contentious issue, with past editions marred by neighbors' complaints regarding noise and disturbance. The move to SeatGeek Stadium is positioned as a logistical upgrade, yet, it surfaces transportation questions for thousands of festival-goers who previously utilized public transportation to attend the event. Notably, Riot Fest is the third music festival that has chosen to leave Douglass Park, following Lyrical Lemonade's Summer Smash festival, with the Heatwave music festival having moved to the Huntington Bank Pavilion on Northerly Island in 2023, shared by the Block Club Chicago.

As the dust settles on the changes, confirmed by a publicist with the festival, Riot Fest insists the community bond with North Lawndale will remain intact. "We're not abandoning the community here … we’re taking them on our journey, as well," Riot Mike said, reassuring fans that the essence of Riot Fest’s community engagement isn’t lost with the venue shift.
