In the shadowed streets of Corona, a deputy-involved shooting early Tuesday morning left one woman dead and sparked an ongoing Department of Justice investigation. According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, the incident unfolded when a deputy, on patrol around 1:10 a.m., attempted to make contact with several individuals near the 1000 block of West 6th Street.
The encounter swiftly escalated when these subjects fled, prompting a pursuit that led to a violent physical confrontation. As the deputy rounded a building's corner, a male suspect allegedly attacked him. Caught in the struggle, and while fighting off the assault by the female suspect who was joined in, the deputy ended up shooting her. Assistance from community members later proved crucial in subduing the male suspect, who had sought to disarm the officer.
The female suspect received immediate medical attention but succumbed to her injuries after being taken to a local hospital. The release stated, "The female suspect was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased," as stated by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Meanwhile, the deputy sustained moderate injuries during the altercation and was accorded medical treatment. The male suspect, who also suffered minor injuries but managed to continue engaging the officer, is currently in custody.
