Texas just got a dose of unwelcome news as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) confirmed a second case of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Sutton County's deer breeding facilities.
According to TPWD, a two-year-old female white-tailed deer, postmortem no less, waved the red flag with a positive CWD test, following protocol to keep the surveillance tight at the facility.
The deer, having been tested by the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL), threw into the spotlight once again the insidious nature of this disease; showing up unannounced and unwelcome while scampering through the Edward Plateau region. As reported by TPWD, the test results were confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa, just to double down on the diagnostics because, well, one can't be too careful with these stealthy infectious diseases.
