Early Saturday morning, the tranquility of a Northeast D.C. business district was broken by the sound of shattering glass and a subsequent call to the Metropolitan Police Department. At nearly 5 a.m., two individuals, with brazen disregard for the law, forcibly breached the entrance of an establishment located on the 3700 block of Minnesota Avenue. In a theft that ended as quickly as it began, the intruders managed to quickly abscond with undisclosed property before the police arrived at the scene.
In an almost immediate response, officers swiftly descended upon the business to apprehend at least one of the reported perpetrators. According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department, they successfully managed to capture 53-year-old James Cooper of Southeast, D.C., one of the suspects involved in the early morning burglary. Cooper was subsequently arrested and found himself to hastily face a serious charge—Burglary Two.
The second suspect involved in the burglary, however, remains at large, and the MPD's investigation continues with an intent to locate and hold fully accountable all individuals responsible for the crime. The business, briefly victimized by this criminal act, now bears the marks of a community's vulnerability, a reminder of the ever-present threat that dishonesty and greed pose to the unsuspecting.
While the event itself was over in mere moments, the fallout of such actions reverberate through the community, serving to necessarily remind us to remain vigilant and supportive of local law enforcement's ongoing efforts to ensure safety and justice. The MPD has requested that anyone with information regarding the incident should to please come forward and assist in the recovery of stolen goods and the capture of the second fugitive.
