A brazen act of grand theft unfolded in Palm Desert when a woman, posing as someone in need of directions, swiped a necklace right off the neck of the helpful individual who assisted her. This incident, which occurred on Monday, June 3, 2024, took a turn toward resolution as officers apprehended the suspect, identified as Marcideza Dumitru, a Romanian National, on the following day.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office detailed how deputies were approached by the victim in the 34000 block of Monterey Avenue. The victim described how the suspect slyly exchanged his genuine necklace with a fake while expressing gratitude. The crime occurred promptly at 12:46 p.m., with the perpetrator fleeing the scene with an accomplice by car. According to details obtained from a press release by Sergeant Daniel Milbrandt, the victim noticed the theft as the suspect's vehicle disappeared from sight.
However, it wasn't long until the suspect's luck ran out. Approximately one hour later, deputies located a vehicle matching the description near Alessandro Boulevard and Perris Boulevard in Moreno Valley. Dumitru was arrested for grand theft and it emerged that she was already under the radar of the FBI, marked as part of a Transnational Organized Crime Group.
The vehicle's driver was initially detained but released pending further investigation. Dumitru, meanwhile, found herself booked into the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning. The Sheriff's Office used this incident to highlight an uptick in such thefts, warning the public of suspects often utilizing overwhelming close contact to execute their thefts. "Please remain vigilant and cautious," the office cautioned, specifically when approached in parking lots.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office urges anyone with information on crimes of this nature to step forward. The call for public assistance was included in the official statement, requesting that tips be directed to Investigator Pfohlman at 760–836–1600.
