Getting ahead of the curve on the impending tropical threat, Governor Greg Abbott set the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) into high gear, establishing a 24-hour operational presence at the Texas State Emergency Operations Center, now sitting at a Level II readiness status. The governor's proactivity comes in response to weather forecasts predicting significant rainfall and potential flooding in parts of Texas, primarily focused on South Texas, the Coastal Bend, and Southeast Texas, according to a statement on the governor's official website.
Concern for public safety is at the forefront, with the Governor urging "Texans in at-risk areas to remain vigilant, monitor weather conditions, and take necessary precautions to keep themselves and their loved ones safe," stressing the importance of preparedness in the face of the tropical system that the National Weather Service expects to intensify, as the governor's office reported. In the statement, it's made clear that an array of state agencies, including the likes of the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, Texas Department of Transportation, and Texas Health and Human Services Commission among others are ordered to report to the emergency center to streamline resource allocation and response activities.
Ensuring Texas is armed to teeth with resources, Abbott has marshaled forces from across state departments, activating teams from the Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas National Guard, which include over 100 personnel, 24 vehicles, and CH47 Chinook helicopters. These developments come on the heels of an earlier directive by Abbott to TDEM to activate state emergency resources, all of which remain strategically staged across the state to support local officials as they brace for the storm system.
Residents are encouraged by both the Governor and TDEM to stay on top of local forecasts and adhere to emergency personnel instructions; with resources like TexasReady.gov, TexasFlood.org, and the Department of Public Safety’s DriveTexas.org providing crucial information for those in the path of the storm, TDEM has compiled a range of preparedness tips at their website aiming to equip Texans with the knowledge needed for weathering the storm safely and effectively.
