On Monday, Texas-based travel center giant Buc-ee's made its latest regional expansion with the opening of a new location in Smiths Grove, Kentucky, marking the second outpost in the state. Touted for its extensive size and array of offerings, Buc-ee's Smiths Grove stretches across 53,000 square feet and has been strategically placed just off Interstate 65, a critical thoroughfare between Louisville and Nashville. The anticipation was palpable as, crowds eager to witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony and explore the amenities, began forming lines in the early morning hours, according to WDRB.
The new Buc-ee’s location boasts not only the company's iconic beaver mascot and an array of merchandise but also its award-winning restrooms and a total of 120 gas pumps. Among the highlights are Buc-ee's staple offerings such as Texas barbecue, homemade fudge, and the much-beloved Beaver Nuggets. The travel center's advent is also a boon for the local economy, providing at least 200 jobs, with the starting pay reportedly beginning "well above minimum wage," along with full benefits, a matching 401(k) plan, and paid vacation, as detailed by WDRB. Notably, Smiths Grove has a population of around 900, a fact that denotes its status as the smallest city to host a Buc-ee facility.
Representatives from across the state's political and community spheres were present at the inaugural proceedings, including U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, senior advisor to Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Rocky Adkins, and Smiths Grove Mayor David Stiffey. The array of dignitaries underscored the significance of such an opening for the region. "Smiths Grove may be small, but the community has welcomed us with as much love and enthusiasm as our largest cities", Stan Beard of Buc-ee's, conveyed the company's sentiment in a statement obtained by KXAN.
While Smiths Grove now revels in the spotlight with its new Buc-ee's, Luling in Central Texas recently celebrated its own Buc-ee's debut on June 10, currently holding the title as the largest in the country at 75,000 square feet. With these two latest additions, Buc-ee's now operates a total of 50 stores primarily in the South and Texas, indicative of a growing trend where regional brands extend their footprint beyond their initial borders. This expansion not only meets the demand for service-centric travel plazas but also reflects a wider economic strategy intent on tapping into burgeoning highway corridors, a move that seems to steadily enhance its corporate profile and consumer base, as reported by KXAN.
