A California woman has admitted to trying to scam her auto insurer after a traffic accident, prosecutors said. Tyreema Brown, a resident of Thousand Oaks, pleaded guilty to committing automobile insurance fraud on May 29, 2024, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
Brown was involved in a collision but did not have collision coverage when the incident occurred. Several days later, she added the coverage and subsequently filed a claim with Allstate Insurance Company, "the day after she added collision coverage," authorities stated. Her scheme unraveled after an investigation by Allstate and the California Department of Insurance indicated she misrepresented the incident's date.
Mike Frawley, Senior Deputy District Attorney and part of the district's Auto Insurance Fraud Unit, led the prosecution against Brown. "Automobile insurance fraud is punishable by up to five years in county jail and a fine up to $50,000, or double the amount of fraud, whichever is greater," the district attorney's office detailed.
Brown's sentencing is set for July 22, 2024, where she will face the music in Ventura County Superior Court at 9:00 a.m. The case number is 2023008861, the district attorney’s office announced. With the guilty plea, she admits to the single felony count of insurance fraud under PC 550(b)(1).
