Three individuals sustained injuries early Saturday on I-76 in Philadelphia following a chain-reaction collision, effectively closing the westbound side of the highway for a number of hours. The incident initiated with a minor crash between a gray SUV and a U-Haul box truck, as per CBS News Philadelphia. The two vehicles, remaining in the right lane brought the flow of pre-dawn traffic to a standstill.
Details from Pennsylvania State Police, shared with 6abc indicate that after the initial collision, the occupants of the gray SUV exited their vehicle to discuss the matter with the U-Haul driver. It was during this roadside conference, that destiny dealt its indiscriminate hand with a dump truck crashing into the rear of the stationary U-Haul, propelling it into the unsuspecting group.
The force of the collision was such that all three individuals from the SUV were struck and subsequently required hospitalization. According to the authorities, a 34-year-old man from Collingdale is in a stable condition – a singular thread of good news woven through the tapestry of this tragedy. Tragically the other victims, a 24-year-old woman from Buffalo, New York and a 25-year-old woman from Aurora, Ohio are fighting for their lives, as they are listed in "extremely critical condition," this somber detail coming from NBC Philadelphia.
The closure of I-76's westbound lanes created a snarl in the Philadelphia artery for several hours, as investigators and emergency crews worked the scene. While the highway has since been reopened, the repercussions of this event continue to linger. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the crash as the investigation proceeds, or if any charges will be forthcoming. Motorists are reminded, in the echoes of this cautionary tale, the importance of safety and vigilance on the roadways, especially when they find themselves in the vulnerable position of a pedestrian amidst the rush of steel and rubber that is our modern commute.
