In a remarkable display of coordination, the Sonoma Sheriff's Search and Rescue team successfully located two individuals who were reported missing in separate incidents on the same night. According to the Sonoma Sheriff's Office, the operations commenced on Tuesday evening and stretched into the following day.
The first incident involved a 28-year-old woman who had disappeared after spending time with her boyfriend on a beach by the Russian River in rural Healdsburg. The search started around 7:30 p.m. after the woman's boyfriend raised the alarm. The woman, along with her two dogs, was found safe around 11:00 p.m., reportedly having lost her way back to the car, the Sheriff's Office revealed.
Concurrently, another distressing situation unfolded as reports of a 62-year-old resident missing from the Occidental area reached the authorities. The individual had gone out for a hike at about 2 p.m. and had failed to return. Search efforts were immediately mobilized, with additional support from Cotati Police and the Sheriff’s search and rescue volunteers.
The search endured through the night and concluded around noon the following day, when the missing hiker was found with minor injuries. A helicopter from the unit known as Henry 1 was instrumental in the rescue, "conducted a long line rescue" and brought the hiker to the command post. After the rescue, the hiker, still in good spirits, was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the Sheriff’s Office stated.
Both rescues were a testament to the courage and commitment of the volunteers who were part of a larger Bay Area coalition that included teams from Marin, Napa, Mendocino, Contra Costa, San Mateo Counties, the Occidental Fire Department, Bay Area Mountain Rescue, and the California Rescue Dog Association. The Sonoma Sheriff's Office extended its gratitude to the allied agencies and non-government organizations "for sending us help when we needed it." They also lauded the Search and Rescue volunteers for their "hard work and dedication."
