Two juveniles involved in an armed robbery near Ventura State Beach have been found responsible for their crimes, according to a recent announcement from the Ventura County District Attorney's Office. The incident, which occurred on April 23, saw the young perpetrators robbing a woman at gunpoint, deputies say. The press release from the District Attorney's office, obtained by SFist, offers a stark reminder of the youth's involvement in serious crimes.
During the robbery, which unfolded on Harbor Boulevard, the juveniles were reported to have approached the victim on electric bikes, faces concealed, and weapons drawn. The victim, who complied with their demand for her purse, fortunately did not suffer physical harm. Authorities later detained two individuals matching the suspects' descriptions, finding them in possession of the loaded ghost gun, which lacks traceable serial numbers, and items identified as the victim’s stolen property.
Juvenile defendant 1 contested the charges but was found responsible on June 6 for second-degree armed robbery, with the additional finding that he had personally used a firearm in the commitment of the crime, stated the District Attorney's announcement. The second juvenile had previously entered an admission to the armed robbery charge in May. Deputy District Attorney Heather Sweatman, a member of the DA’s Juvenile Unit, noted the victim's courage both during the robbery and in her subsequent courtroom testimony.
"The victim in this case showed incredible bravery during the robbery and while testifying in court," Ms. Sweatman said. "The judge’s ruling demonstrates that individuals who victimize our community will be held accountable, regardless of their age." The disposition hearings for the two juveniles are slated for July 18 and 23, and both remain detained at the Juvenile Facilities in Oxnard.
