A 19-year-old man from Washington, D.C. has been sentenced to a prison term of seven years for his involvement in a 2023 shooting incident in Southeast Washington, as recently announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves alongside Pamela A. Smith, Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department. The young man, identified as Ivan Dixon, had previously entered a guilty plea on charges including Assault with Intent to Kill and illegal firearm possession.

During his trial in March, Dixon admitted to counts of Assault with Intent to Kill, Possession of a Firearm During a Crime of Violence, and Carrying a Pistol Without a License, the latter in connection to a separate case. His sentence, handed down by the Honorable Robert Okun, will be followed, by 3 years of supervised release after the completion of his incarceration, according to the Justice Department's press release.

As outlined by prosecutors, and agreed upon by Dixon, the incident unfolded when the defendant was traveling in a Ford Transit van. Dixon's target parked outside a supermarket, and as this individual entered the establishment, Dixon's vehicle made a U-turn and drove slowly by. After circling and parking, Dixon emerged from the van and discharged 16 shots as the unsuspecting victim returned from the store with a bystander innocently in tow. The original target escaped harm, however, the bystander was injured, suffering multiple gunshot wounds; thankfully, they were non-life-threatening.
