The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of Washington D.C. continues its efforts to rid the city's streets of illegal firearms, reporting a total of 45 recovered guns over a one-week period. According to an MPD release, the seizures occurred from Monday, June 10, through Monday, June 17, and involved a combination of handguns, including "Ghost Guns," and a BB gun. The weapons were recovered in various neighborhoods across the District, with several arrests made, largely for carrying a pistol without a license and possession of unregistered firearms and ammunition.
Digging into the specifics, the MPD's statement included a series of incidents whereby individuals, some as young as 15, were apprehended with these illegal firearms. Among the recovered firearms was a Canik 55 9mm handgun found in the 4900 block of Just Street, Northeast as well as multiple Glock 19 9mm handguns in different locations, alongside other types of handguns and ammunition. Notably, a 17-year-old male was arrested in the 900 block of Eye Street, Northeast, with charges including possession of a large ammunition feeding device.
Furthermore, a notable aspect of the week’s recoveries is the recurring mention of "Ghost Guns"—homemade firearms that lack serial numbers and thereby circumvent traditional methods of registration and tracking. These untraceable weapons have become a pressing issue for law enforcement agencies across the country, as they pose a significant challenge in the fight against gun violence. Details from the MPD highlight a "Ghost Gun" recovered in the intersection of 16th Street and Benning Weathermar Road, Northeast, leading to the arrest of a 41-year-old man on numerous charges, including the possession of a large ammunition feeding device and a bench warrant.
The report, which emphasizes the department's intelligence-based policing strategy, does not claim to account for all firearms recovered in the District during this time frame. It does, however, showcase the MPD's proactive and continuous efforts to track down and seize these dangerous weapons. In one instance, a 9mm caliber "Ghost Gun" was reported as recovered in the 3300 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest, and arrests were made following the discovery of firearms on the 1900 block of 18th Street, Southeast, including charges related to the unlawful possession of a machine gun. The recurring theme across these incidents is a narrative of young individuals, many without a fixed address, found in possession of deadly weapons, underpinning a troubling pattern that afflicts urban centers like Washington D.C.
