A fatal encounter interrupted the city's nightlife as two men were reportedly killed in a downtown shooting near a bustling entertainment strip this past weekend. Identified by Grand Rapids Police, Jashaun Morgan, 28, and Eliot Flores, 31, lost their lives in the early hours of June 2 along Cesar Chavez Avenue. Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom, as reported by WZZM13, announced the completion of the autopsies by the Kent County Medical Examiner, which ruled the deaths homicides.
The shootings unfolded in the vicinity of popular spots like the Tin Can bar and The Intersection venue. According to FOX 17, there was an exchange of gunfire around 1 a.m., wherein Morgan and Flores were two of three individuals involved. A third man sustained a leg injury but is expected to make a complete recovery. Firearms were recovered at the scene, including two handguns and what is likely a rifle, with one of the handguns found in a vehicle. "It seemed that these individuals knew each other. They knew each other very well," Chief Winstrom said, suggesting a personal dispute rather than an attack on the public.
In the same cycle of violence, less than 24 hours later, a second shooting claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy just off Madison Avenue. He was identified by police as Amillier Penn. "A young boy, 15 years of age, was playing football with friends and he was shot numerous time and killed," Winstrom said, per WZZM13.
As the investigation continues and the city grapples with the aftermath of this violence, the Grand Rapids Police Department is reaching out to the community for assistance. They encourage anyone with knowledge regarding the incidents to come forward.
