A Highland Township man, aged 21, tragically drowned while swimming at Townsend Lake in Independence Township, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. The man, whose name has not been released, was reported to have been swimming with a friend on Tuesday afternoon when he failed to resurface after going underwater. The sheriff's deputies responded to the scene around 1:40 p.m., as reported by CBS News Detroit.

The recovery effort by the sheriff's search and rescue team ensued, and the swimmer was located at a depth of about 20 feet, roughly 100 feet from shore. It was around 2 p.m. when the dive team discovered him. In a statement obtained by The Detroit News, paramedics subsequently attempted life-saving measures on the victim. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

This lake, situated east of Dixie Highway and near Waterford Road, is on private property with limited access through the Oakland County Sportsmen's Club. Despite the victim and his friend both being described as athletically fit, young men by Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, it appears fatigue became a critical factor in the incident. "At some point during the swim, one became fatigued it appears and went under," Bouchard told WXYZ.

The string of recent drowning incidents in Oakland County, which encompasses over 450 lakes, has been tied by Sheriff Bouchard to the warmer weather driving people toward water-based recreation. "We’ve had a spike. I think in part because it’s been very warm and people are gravitating to the water," Bouchard said, highlighting a concerning trend reflected in at least five drownings this summer. Residents of the local community, like Jim Helm who has lived on the lake for 25 years, expressed disbelief and sorrow over the incident. "I have two boys, teenagers. They swim out here. I mean, you would never think it would happen," Helm recounted to WXYZ.
