4.9-Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Mojave Desert, Tremors Felt from Las Vegas to Los AngelesSource: X/USGS ShakeAlert

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck southwest of Las Vegas with the center approximately 13 miles east of Barstow, California in the Mojave Desert. According to News 3 Las Vegas, the earthquake happened around 1 p.m. on Monday. Diving into the ground at a depth of 7.9 kilometers or rough about 4.9 miles, the tremor was followed by at least two notable aftershocks with magnitudes of 3.5 and 2.8.

While seismologist Lucy Jones took to the social platform X to comment on the quake's proximity to the Calico fault, expecting in a post that it "will not change the probability of a San Andreas earthquake," a spokesperson for the Clark County District Court reported feeling the tremors from the Regional Justice Center in downtown Las Vegas, as per News 3 Las Vegas. This local shaking, as far as the Las Vegas valley could also be felt, was mild according to the U.S. Geological Survey website listing.

The quake's reach wasn't confined to the immediate area; residents of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Temecula also reportedly felt the shaking. As per a report by FOX5 Las Vegas, online chatter suggested that the impact of the earthquake extended even to the Las Vegas Valley.

Comparatively small when set against the dramatic scale of Earth's tectonic movements, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake previously reported served as a reminder of the region's geological activity in April, which had been felt southwest of Henderson. As of now, it remains unclear whether the recent seismic event has caused any significant damage.
