The City of Arnold is turning to technological surveillance in response to recent vandalism incidents at Roosevelt Park. After a spate of upheavals that left the park littered with trash and its amphitheater and pavilion damaged, the city is seeking to install additional video surveillance as a countermeasure. Roosevelt Park, once a locale of recreation, had been forced to shutter for two weeks in June due to the extent of destruction attributed to a group of teenagers, as reported by WPXI.

In both efforts to deter future offenses and to aid in the prosecution of those behind past ones, Arnold's leadership has tapped into federal grants and is anticipating funds from the state for this security enhancement project. According to WPXI, Police Chief Josh Stanga acknowledged the limited scope of cameras, saying, "The cameras are a great deterrent but as you know, and as I know, cameras don’t stop everything." He added, "It just helps us identify the individuals that are responsible for it and quickly prosecute them."

In a move anticipative of the surveillance expansion, the council is exploring various funding avenues, including a state grant, as they plan broad improvements within the park. Local shop owner Tom Tyborowski, who witnessed the vandalism, voiced his frustration. "They are unruly, some of them not respectful, and they can do damage over there," Tyborowski stated, as per CBS News Pittsburgh. "But steps are being taken to correct that."

The city expects the new surveillance cameras to be operational by early next year, aiming to restore a sense of safety and community to Roosevelt Park.
