The streets of the District became a scene of tragedy earlier this April when a young man was shot and killed on North Capitol Street. According to information from the Metropolitan Police Department, it was around 9:07 p.m. on April 30, when police were called to the 1500 block of North Capitol Street, Northeast, due to reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers found 19-year-old Dequan Garner, of Northeast, suffering from gunshot wounds on the sidewalk. His life slipped away there, on the cold concrete.
The pursuit of justice for Garner took a significant step forward on July 11, with an arrest made in connection with his death. 45-year-old Maurice Corbin, a man with no known permanent address, was apprehended by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. A D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant paved the way for Corbin's capture, charging him with a count of First Degree Murder While Armed. Corbin's arrest offered a semblance of closure to a case that, for over two months, had left a community grappling with loss and the relentless quest for answers.
Details surrounding the motive and circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation and information will be forthcoming as the legal process against Maurice Corbin progresses. The tragic death of Dequan Garner stands as a sobering reminder of the work that remains in tackling the scourge of gun violence.
