At the Republican National Convention, a prominent Texas figure, U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt, was entrusted with a prime time speaking slot as a token of his steadfast allegiance to former President Donald Trump. "I’m the great-great-grandson of a slave. I’m the son of a retired lieutenant colonel. I’m the product of West Point along with my other two siblings. And I risked my life in combat to preserve our nation," Hunt declared, supporting Trump with the same fervor that Trump once supported him, according to The Texas Tribune.
Hunt's journey with Trump began during his 2020 campaign for the 7th Congressional District, with Trump's endorsement propelling him to victory in a crowded primary, though Hunt ultimately lost to Democrat Lizzie Fletcher. Despite the past election's competition, Hunt and Fletcher now collaborate representing Houston's interests in Congress as, colleagues. Their past rivalry seems to have dissolved, leading to united efforts, particularly in sectors like energy and flood management. Nevertheless, Hunt remains a staunch Trump ally, a fact that was underlined during the RNC.
Not only does Hunt serve as a campaign surrogate, but he's also at the forefront of Republican efforts to gain ground with Black voters. "We came up with this idea, and it was the idea of how do we capitalize on one of the top demographics of the Democrat party," Hunt told The Texas Tribune about outreach efforts like the "Congress, Cognac, and Cigars" event in Atlanta. His initiatives demonstrate the GOP's strategic pivot to diversify its base, engaging Black communities traditionally aligned with the Democratic Party.
Throughout the convention, Hunt's ascendancy was evident. Following a standing ovation at a Texas delegation breakfast, he acknowledged the media attention. It’s his first time at a national party convention, and he said it’s “the most media I’ve done in my life." His coalition with Trump could potentially catapult him to higher office, a hypothesis supported by his openness to a position within a possible future Trump administration. "Congressman Hunt would honorably accept a position within the future administration to serve President Trump and this nation, especially if it helps Texas," his campaign stated. Despite the political limelight, and the tumult of the convention schedule, Hunt's unwavering support for Trump persists.
