A fire in the Gwynn Oak area of Baltimore County claimed the life of a man late Wednesday evening. The blaze, which officials have determined to be accidental, was reportedly sparked by smoking materials that were not properly discarded. Michael James Smith, 58, was discovered unresponsive on the second story of the townhouse located on Langford Road, as reported by WMAR-2 News.
The Baltimore County Fire Department arrived on the scene at 11:36 p.m. on July 3 after receiving reports of a burning odor. Upon entry, firefighters were met with flames on the second floor where they found Smith in cardiac arrest. Despite the efforts of the emergency services, Smith's life could not be saved once he arrived at St. Agnes Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The fire was declared under control within minutes at 11:54 p.m., preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent homes. While the Fire Department's swift response averted an even greater tragedy, the loss of Smith serves as a somber reminder of the hazards associated with smoking indoors.
Fire investigators concluded that the fire originated from improperly discarded smoking materials, as detailed by WBAL-TV.
