After an arduous search on Lake Michigan, rescue teams have found the body of a 26-year-old man who tragically fell overboard from a fishing vessel. WZZM 13 reported that the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office dispatched the Marine Division around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, following reports that the individual had toppled into the water without wearing a life jacket.
Despite efforts from crew members to quickly provide him a life vest, the man was unable to grab it. Conditions on the lake promptly turned against the rescue efforts, as the crew lost sight of the man within minutes. Efforts to find and save the man had to be transitioned into a recovery mission due to the challenging wind and surf, as conveyed by the Grand Haven Tribune.
The search and recovery mission, involving multiple agencies, concluded the following day when the man's body was located around two miles offshore in 80 feet of water. This recovery brought a somber closure to the ordeal that began near the Muskegon Channel. The identity of the victim has not been released, in respect of the privacy of the man's family.
Reflecting on the incident, Master Chief Kyle Thomas, officer in charge of U.S. Coast Guard Station Grand Haven and Ford Operating Location Muskegon, highlighted the importance of safety precautions on the water. "We wear ours on our boats to keep us safe every time we leave the pier," Thomas said, insisting on the necessity for the public to adopt similar habits. This advice resonates deeply considering the recent string of losses in the area, as indicated in an interview obtained by WZZM 13.
The recovery mission turned out to be a cooperative undertaking, with the Sheriff's Office being assisted by Norton Shores and Muskegon Fire Departments, amongst other agencies.
